How Invisalign Differs From Invisible Braces

Posted on

When you are researching invisible braces, one product that will often appear is Invisalign. While this is a great product for those who want braces and do not want to have them be visible, they are just one type of product you can choose from. There are also invisible braces that are not considered the same as Invisalign retainers.

Invisalign are not actually braces. Instead, they are retainers meant to shift teeth back in to the proper position. You will not wear an Invisalign all day, but you will wear your invisible braces constantly. With Invisalign, you will typically take it out before it is time to eat.

Visibility

While invisible braces are difficult to see, Invisalign retainer are the hardest to see. They are virtually transparent and most individuals do not even know someone wears them unless they are told.

Number of Adjustments

You'll have to go into an orthodontist more often to have your Invisalign retainer adjusted. In contrast, you will have your invisible braces adjusted much less often, since invisible braces can be tightened more.

What Can Be Treated

There are limitations in what can be corrected with an Invisalign retainer. For example, braces are able to correct gap teeth. They are able to fix an overbite or an underbite. Crowded or crooked teeth can also be corrected using invisible braces.

Durability

The clear braces can be more brittle than other types of braces or Invisalign. However, it typically takes a lot of force to break clear braces. If you have an accident, you're more likely to break your Invisalign braces.

Service Availability

You will have a much easier time finding an orthodontist who offers invisible braces vs. an orthodontist who offers Invisalign. Because the latter may not be available in your area, it may not be worth it to travel far away to be fitted for an Invisalign retainer when you have to replace your retainer so often.

If you are not careful with your Invisalign retainer, you might not achieve the results you want. With braces, you cannot remove them, so you don't have to worry about forgetting to wear your braces. However, a retainer can easily be forgotten and you won't experience the benefits of an Invisalign if you don't wear it for at least 22 hours. But there are upsides and downsides to both options, and as long as the option you choose corrects the dental problem you're facing, you've made a great choice.
